En la costa del sur de Tenerife es posible encontrarse con varios tipos de tortugas marinas. Desde las tortugas más emblemáticas como la tortuga boba (caretta caretta), la tortuga verde (chelonia mydas) y la gran gigante tortuga laúd (dermochelys coriacea) hasta las tortugas más esporádicas como la tortuga carey (Eretmochelys imbricata), la tortuga lora (Lepidochelys kempii) y la tortuga olivácea (Lepidochelys olivácea).
La isla Tenerife dispone de una gran variedad de estas hermosas criaturas. Aquí te explicaremos algunos aspectos importantes de las tortugas marinas que se observan con mayor facilidad en la isla de Tenerife.
La tortuga boba(caretta caretta). Las tortugas bobas son conocidas principalmente por sus grandes migraciones a través del Atlántico.

La reproducción de las tortugas bobas es un fenómeno impresionante. A lo largo de su vida, utilizan las corrientes de los mares para realizar largos viajes por todo el atlántico anidando normalmente en playas tropicales. Esta especie, se puede diferenciar por sus colores de tonos amarillos, marrones y rojizos los cuales lucen en sus robustos caparazones.
Como característica principaleste tipo de tortuga, es que posee el caparazón duro más grande del mundo que puede alcanzar el metro de longitud. La tortuga boba puede llegar a pesar hasta 200 kg, no obstante, el ejemplar más grande registrado pesaba más de 500 kg. El único diformismo sexual que es observable fácilmente (diferencia entre macho y hembra), es que el macho tiene una cola y garras de mayor longitud.
Datos de interés: Este tipo de tortugas viven alrededor del 80% de su vida por debajo de la superficie haciendo buceos de unos 15-30 min de promedio, pero pueden aguantar más de 4 horas sin subir a la superficie. Como es común en este tipo de reptiles, estas tortugas pueden realizar hibernaciones, momentos en el cuales entran en un estado de letargo y pueden no respirar durante 7 horas.
